Dinner Set Buying Guide
Whether you like to mix and match or have a set with the same colour and shape, buying a dinner set has more to it than just the superficial look. This buying guide is going to take you through the do’s and don’ts of choosing the right dinner sets These are the things to consider before investing in a fine dining set.
1. Material decides Character
There are a varied number of materials used in the making of an elegant dinnerware set. Right from the ancient times, serveware and cutlery have held a lot of importance in representing a household. Whether it is earthenware, stoneware, steel, melamine or porcelain, go for the material that suits your requirements the best.
- Bone China
These dishes are made up of bone ash created using quite an amount of animal bone and calcium phosphate. This material is in no doubt tough against rough handling and lasts longer compared to other porcelain material. These are totally dishwasher safe but can be a bit porous which means they are not completely stain-proof. Essential care is required when using a bone china dish with a metallic rim in the oven or while washing using harsh chemical dish soap.
- Porcelain
These are all-white dinner sets although some come with a minimal design are on most parts bone ash-free. They are 100% eco-friendly and vegetarians needn’t worry about using the plates. They are cheaper than bone china and require less care during washing and heating. They are all dishwasher and microwave safe. Porcelain dishes can withstand high temperatures and are thus treated to toughen their durability.
- Stainless Steel
The cheapest available material for kitchen and serveware is the stainless steel. Not denying the fact that a good set depends upon the quality of the steel. A heavy-gauge steel is recommended for its longevity. A heavy bottom one works well for maintaining and resisting heat at the same time. They are not microwave-safe but there are dishwashers available that can wash steel dishes. Stainless steel dinnerwares require the least care in terms of cleaning and are definitely stain-free. However, scratches on the surface cannot be avoided after extensive use.
- Earthenware
It is the most natural product available. As the name suggests, the dishes are molded using the finest clay and treated at the right temperature to enhance its durability. It gives an artisanal look to your dinner set and is a perfect choice for a casual gathering. However, these dishes need extensive care. They are quite porous, which means you cannot avoid stains and bacteria. Soaking before washing them is not a good idea. Although it does not have any dramatic reactions to chemicals.
- Melamine
The least recommended material but a cheaper option for you. Melamine is an organic nitrogen mixed compound that is used to create plastic-like material. They are unbreakable and have the highest points for durability. Sadly, they are not BPA free and thus not food safe. When used with sharp objects, the surface does get scratched and even holds stain if not attended to within a normal period. They are dishwasher safe but not all melamine products are microwave safe. So check in the production description if you use a microwave oven.
2. Patterns for Different Mood
A pattern for a classy dinner set is characterized by the mood or atmosphere it represents. So a dinner set can be divided into romantic, classic and modern patterns. Romantic patterned dinnerware usually comes with a decor of twining vines, blossomed flowers and miniature leaves. Classic dinnerware is always simple with a white surface for the most part except for a classy ring around the rim. Minimal design is the mantra for classic dinnerware. Modern patterns have contemporary, abstract, geometric shapes placed on one side of the dish accompanied by bold solid colors.
3. Place setting Decides the Quantity
The term translates to the number of pieces required in the dinner set to serve the required number of people. So, based on the number of people in your family, you will have to decide on how big a set you want to buy. The minimum number of pieces available in a set is 14 for a family of four. If you are not interested in going for a set as such, dishes can now be bought individually. It is up to you how you customize your own set.
4. Size and shape for Usability
Not all dinner sets follow the same measurements. Depending upon the items you serve, you will have to anticipate the required diameter of a full plate. The ideal size of a full dinner plate is around 10” while that of a quarter plate is around 6-7”. Keep an extra eye on the bowl size. Shape plays an important role if you are into serving western dishes. For example, pasta bowl or soup bowl has a different shape and size compared to our veg bowls.
If you don’t like the regular round shapes, there are shapes as many as your cooking recipes. They are always a good option to add a layer of style to your table.
5. Cost is Key
The pricing of the dinnerware is on the higher side in general. Nevertheless, they do turn out to be a good investment once bought. They do sustain for a very long time if stored and transported properly. A decent set of dinner dishes would cost one anywhere between Rs 1500-3000.
